Lewis County is located in northwestern New York. A large portion of the county is in Adirondack State Park. Lewis County has a total area of approximately 1290 square miles of which 99% is land and 1% water. As of the census of 2000, there were 26,944 people, 10,040 households, and 7,309 families residing in Lewis County, New York. Out of New York's 58 counties, Lewis County ranks as the fourth least populous one. The county is named after Morgan Lewis, Governor of New York when the county was established in 1805.
